The Right Way To Take Out The Trash

by Owen Baker

Your sanitation company picks up the trash at the same time on the same day, so you should always be prepared, right? If you are like many people, however, you may end up struggling every week to get the garbage out neatly and on time. You can make this task less stressful and more efficient by following a garbage routine.

Bagging

Investing in stronger trash bags is a good first step to making trash day less stressful. You may save a few pennies on the cheap bags, but they often split. You end up with a mess in the trash can and on the floor. If you can see that your trash bag has broken, put a fresh bag over the top of the trash can and pull it down about halfway. Then, hold onto the bag as you tip the can, emptying the contents into it. Secure the top with twist ties or by tying the ends into a knot. Never overfill your bags or smash garbage into them so that more will fit. You'll end up with heavy and messy bags.

Outdoor Security

When you are storing your garbage outside, you need to keep the cans in a secure area. Consider constructing a small enclosure to keep pests like raccoons, squirrels, and dogs from using your garbage as a buffet. Nothing is more disheartening than discovering your trash spread out in the yard right before trash pickup. If you already have a storage shed in the backyard, make a space in it for your garbage, if possible.

Preparation

If you often forget to put out your garbage, set a reminder on your phone. Setting out the garbage the night before is not a good idea as it leaves your garbage vulnerable to pests. Try getting up ten minutes early on trash day so you have plenty of time to take out the bins. Use disposable gloves to protect yourself from the bags' contents as you neatly line them up for the trash truck. Don't try to carry too many bags at once unless you want to throw out your back right before work.

If you are sick of the last minute trash day dance, you can make trash collection less stressful and messy by planning ahead. The most important steps are proper bagging and storage of the garbage. That way you will only have to transfer neat and intact bags to the curb on the designated day. Then you can simply get on with your daily activities.
